College Welcomes Greater Oversight
Legislation will allow College to better protect the public
TORONTO - The College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Ontario welcomes the passage of new legislation that gives regulatory colleges
regulation-making powers regarding the observation of members in
out-of-hospital facilities and clarifies other investigative powers and
duties.
The College initiated a plan to improve the oversight of cosmetic surgery
in April 2007 and has strongly advocated for legislative changes to ensure
effective regulation of non-hospital facilities in which invasive procedures
are performed.
"It is absolutely critical that the College have the tools it needs to
ensure that doctors, taking care of patients in Ontario, have the skills and
knowledge to do so safely and effectively," said College President Dr. Rayudu
Koka. "And, the public expects that a fundamental part of being a regulated
health professional includes that kind of oversight."
The regulations regarding the inspection of out-of-hospital facilities
that are made possible by Bill 141 are in the process of being drafted.
