New award honours Laurier's Residential Services director
Waterloo - After more than 25 years of service at Laurier, Residential Services director Mike Belanger has established a university-wide reputation for excellence. Belanger is well-known as a keen leader, true friend and inspiring mentor to many Laurier students and staff.
| At the recent Residence Life banquet, Belanger’s legacy was celebrated with the establishment of an award in his honour. The Mike Belanger Residence Life Award was created to provide financial support for future members of the residence life team who improve the Laurier experience for students and demonstrate financial need.
The creation of the award was spearheaded by Rob Hums ’93 and Chris Dodd ’92. Although Belanger is still a few years away from retirement, Hums and Dodd thought it was fitting to honour Belanger’s legacy in this special way while he is still working at Laurier.
"My time as a residence life staff member was filled with amazing memories and created lifelong friendships," said Hums.

"Looking back, it also provided valuable life and work skills. All of these experiences were in large part due to Mike's leadership and contributions."
The award was set up through the generous and enthusiastic support of alumni, staff, faculty and retirees who have all been influenced in some way by Belanger.
Meanwhile, an online tribute website has been created for those interested in contributing to the endowed award. Additionally, a guest book on the tribute site allows those who are interested to leave their own fond memories and congratulations for Belanger.
