Appreciating volunteers working with children and youth
TORONTO As Ontario celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Week, Children’s Aid Societies recognize those community members, parents, teachers and retirees who give of their time to support vulnerable children, youth and their families. Volunteers make a difference in the lives of Ontario’s children and youth.
Every year, thousands of Ontarians volunteer at their local Children’s Aid Society (CAS) to support children, youth and families. Each of Ontario’s 53 mandated child welfare agencies are governed by an elected, volunteer board of directors who provide leadership and guidance. In 2007, 43 agencies involved community members in volunteer programs:
* 5,057 volunteers
* 735,506 volunteer hours completed
* 26,909,960 kilometers driven by volunteers
Ontario’s most vulnerable children and youth need the help and support of people who care about their well-being. “The time a volunteer spends with a young person tutoring them, driving them to appointments or mentoring them is invaluable,” says Jeanette Lewis, Executive Director, Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS). Many Children’s Aid Societies have opportunities for interested community members to participate in improving the lives of children and youth. Ontario’s Children’s Aid Society volunteers are part of a team that includes agency staff and foster parents. Volunteers' valuable contributions enable agencies to provide enriched services to children, youth and their families. Volunteers benefit from training, supervision and recognition for their contributions. If you are interested in volunteering, contact your local CAS to learn more. OACAS joins Ontario’s CASs in acknowledging the dedication of the volunteers in child welfare during Volunteer Appreciation Week.
