Martin Prosperity Institute To Host Conference on Cultural Mapping

Toronto - On June 9-11, 2009, the Martin Prosperity Institute, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Culture, and the City of Toronto - Economic Development, Culture & Tourism Division, will be hosting the inaugural Placing Creativity Conference at the MaRS Centre, 101 College Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The Conference brings together diverse stakeholders from government, the private sector and the academic world to explore the importance of mapping culture in relation to creative spaces and places.

"Identifying and prioritizing local cultural resources is vital to a community's long-term planning process," said Aileen Carroll, Minister of Culture. "Cultural mapping helps municipalities maximize the economic benefits of creative and cultural industries in their local communities."

The conference, featuring international speakers such as Richard Lloyd of Vanderbilt University, will investigate cultural mapping from a number of unique perspectives and disciplines, and will support the interaction of policy-makers, academics and new researchers. Richard is author of "Neo-Bohemia: Art and Commerce in the Postindustrial City". Other Speakers include British-based cultural policy expert Colin Mercer. The conference is an extension of the Placing Creativity partnership which investigates the interconnection between 'Place' and 'Creativity' through a number of different lenses.

"The mission of Placing Creativity is to advance the understanding and practice of cultural resource mapping by developing reusable maps that showcase the cultural sector in Toronto and that can be shared with other jurisdictions and groups," said Kevin Stolarick, Research Director, The Martin Prosperity Institute. "Placing Creativity provides a forum for dialogue and information sharing in developing best practices in creative sector mapping states."

"Placing Creativity is an initiative that emerged early in 2008 to visually illustrate creative and cultural activity in a community or city through place and the potential for cultural mapping to support creative and cultural sector development, as well as advance the implementation of the Creative City Planning Framework and the Agenda for Prosperity" says Mayor David Miller, City of Toronto. "It is a community stakeholder sounding board for the City as it addresses issues such as developing a shared definition for creative and cultural industries for the City of Toronto which will allow us to better measure and advocate on behalf of this sector."

The Lloyd & Delphine Martin Prosperity Institute is associated with the Rotman School of Management and the University of Toronto and is the world's leading think-tank on the role of sub-national factors - location, place and city-regions - in global economic prosperity.
