Red Rock First Nation and Ontario Power Generation sign settlement agreement
TORONTO - The Red Rock First Nation (RRFN) and Ontario
Power Generation (OPG) are pleased to announce the signing of a final
settlement agreement that resolves past grievances from impacts of OPG
operations in the Red Rock First Nation traditional territory and the formal
delivery of an apology to the community by OPG for those impacts.
This establishes the foundation for a positive relationship going forward
between the Red Rock First Nation and Ontario Power Generation. RRFN, together
with other First Nations, and OPG have established a framework for a mutually
beneficial commercial relationship for a potential hydro development. OPG's
Executive Vice President Hydro, John Murphy stated: "This agreement redresses
issues of the past and establishes the foundations for a positive relationship
with the Red Rock First Nation.
OPG has a mandate to develop hydroelectric
generation in the province and we are pleased to be moving forward together
with RRFN to pursue additional renewable electricity for Ontario." Red Rock
First Nation Chief Pierre Pelletier said "there are substantial hydroelectric
opportunities in our homelands. This agreement recognizes the impacts of the
past and looks forward to a more positive future. We believe the new agreement
guarantees many business, employment, environmental provisions and financial
benefits for our people."
