Waterloo applies for funding to improve Lexington Road

Waterloo - The City of Waterloo has applied for government funding to help cover the costs of making significant improvements to Lexington Road, from Weber Street to University Avenue.

The asphalt on this busy stretch is deteriorating, and there’s a need to improve its pedestrian and cycling links.

If the city receives the $1,832,106 it requested from the federal government’s Community Adjustment Fund, it will be able to remove and resurface the asphalt along that section of Lexington Road, create bicycle lanes and install some sidewalks. Curb and sidewalk repairs would also be made, as needed.

In total, this project is expected to cost $2,748,160, with the city covering the difference.

“Lexington Road is a well-travelled street, and these improvements would make it safer for everyone who uses it,” said Mayor Brenda Halloran. “We hope to receive this funding so we can get started on this important project.”

The Government of Canada’s Community Adjustment Fund is designed to reduce the impact of the current economic downturn by offering employment opportunities.
