DB Schenker’s Second Annual Canada-Wide Food Drive Helps Feed Those Less Fortunate In Difficult Economic Times

Logistics Services Provider Collects Over 27,000 Kilograms of Food for Local Food Banks Across the Country

Mississauga Schenker of Canada Ltd., one of the leading logistics service providers to the food industry, announced that its Second Annual Cross-Canada Food Drive Challenge was met with great enthusiasm by the company’s employees, customers and partners. In total, more than 27,669 kilograms (61,000-plus pounds) was collected from DB Schenker’s 40 Canadian locations between June 2 and June 16, 2009. The donations were delivered to Food Banks across the country.

“People with jobs constitute the second largest group of food bank clients, at 14.5% – up from 13.5% in 2007,” says Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director of Food Banks Canada. “Anecdotal evidence suggests that the majority of food bank clients with jobs are employed at low wages. The expansion of the low-wage economy has generated more working poor who, even with full-time jobs, are unable to meet basic needs for themselves and their families.”

“Before 1983, food banks were unimaginable in Canada, as they should be today,” adds Gail Nyberg, Executive Director of Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank. “Unfortunately, these days demand for food banks is at a record high.”

“Our second annual food drive proved that Canadians are always ready to help those in need – regardless of their own financial circumstances,” adds Claude Germain, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Schenker of Canada Ltd. “DB Schenker’s employees, customers and partners have come through once again and I’d like to thank everyone who participated. In particular, I would like to thank our customers Unilever, Mars, Jones Transport and Royal Doulton for their generous contributions. In addition, special thanks to Flash Freight Systems for offering their support to our 2009 Food Drive by graciously donating the temperature-controlled transport of food donations from pick up stations to the Daily Bread Food Bank.”
