Conestoga Student designs winning Pin

Kitchener - Each year high school and college students have the opportunity to design a lapel pin or medal for the Ontario Technological Skills Competition. This year Conestoga’s Sarah Boergers’s design has been selected as the winning pin.

It will be the foundation for this year’s Competition Pin and will be manufactured as the official pin for this year’s contest to be held on Monday May 4th and Tuesday May 5th in Waterloo. The competition is the largest of its kind in Canada and will feature more then 1500 competitors, over 30,000 spectators and 60 plus skilled trade contests with students from elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools. This year’s pin was to be designed for Skills Canada’s 20th anniversary competition and Sarah’s winning pin will be distributed to all competitors, volunteers and partners involved in the competition.

Students could create their designs by hand or computer but had certain criteria they had to include about the contest and organization within their design. “I felt the 20th anniversary was the most important part of this pin so I used it as the center point and designed around it,” said Sarah.

In recognition of winning this year’s contest, Sarah will be presented with a gold medal and a copy of her pin at the Closing Ceremonies of the Ontario Technological Skills Competition on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. The ceremonies will be held at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in Waterloo from 9:00am – 12:00pm.

In addition Sarah will receive recognition in the 2009 Annual Guide to Programs and Competitions, the winter edition of Skills Work in Ontario Newsletter and online at www.skillsontario.com. As well she will receive a plaque and honorarium of $50.00.
