Retail sales in current dollars increased 1.2% in May to $34.0 billion, more than offsetting a modest decline in April.

VANCOUVER - The economic downturn continued to stifle demand for office space in Metro Vancouver during the first half of 2009, with vacant sublease space rising in all eight submarkets. This helped drive up the region's overall vacancy rate to 7.4% from 5.4% at year-end 2008 and 5.0% at mid-year 2008.

Unemployment on the rise: Who’s hit most by the recession?

Toronto - Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the U.S. economy has shed 7.2 million jobs according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The U.S. unemployment rate has more than doubled since June 2007, from 4.6 to 9.5 percent. But what’s also clear is that the economic pain from the downturn is spread unequally. Unemployment among blue-collar manufacturing workers has risen from 6.0 to 15.2 percent, while the rate for professional, technical and creative workers is less then 5 percent.
