YMCA offers helping hand to workers affected by recession
Two month memberships available at Waterloo Region Family YMCAs
Waterloo Region Workers who have lost their jobs as a result of the recession are getting a chance to
get back on their feet. Both the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA in Kitchener and the Chaplin Family
YMCA are offering two-month free memberships to people who have recently lost their job. The Family
YMCAs are working directly with affected companies and the Community Action Centre to identify
participants eligible for the Helping Hand Program.
“The YMCA believes that good health in spirit, mind and body is critical for anyone to reach their full
potential,” said Tom Abbott, VP of Health, Fitness and Recreation for the YMCAs of Cambridge &
Kitchener-Waterloo. “In difficult times, YMCA membership can be particularly helpful. Physical activity
reduces stress and improves energy level, mental attitude and a person’s sense of well being and self
esteem. We believe this opportunity can help people through a tough time.”
Anyone seeking more information about this program is requested to visit: familyymca.ca. They can also
call or visit their local Family YMCA. Cambridge residents should contact, the Chaplin Family YMCA,
250 Hespeler Rd (at the CanAmera Parkway) by calling 519-623-9622. In Kitchener-Waterloo, contact
the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA, 333 Carwood Dr., Kitchener (at Courtland and the Expressway) by
calling 519-743-5201.
The offer is valid until the end of 2009 with the hope that the economy has improved by that point. If a
participant would like to continue beyond the 2-month Helping Hand membership, further financial
assistance is available through the regular YMCA financial assistance program.
The YMCAs of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo are both registered charities dedicated to
strengthening our communities by providing opportunities for personal growth and active involvement for
everyone living in Waterloo Region.
