Carleton University joins Project Hero

Ottawa – Carleton University is establishing a scholarship to provide financial assistance to children of Canadian Forces personnel killed while serving in an active mission.

“Carleton has historically provided access to post-secondary education to Canadian veterans and their families,” says Roseann O’Reilly Runte, president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University. “Joining Project Hero is a fitting way to honour the memory of the brave Canadian men and women who have lost their lives in combat and to support their children.”

Carleton will provide financial assistance for tuition fees during eight academic terms and on-campus residence fees for the first two academic terms.

“We hope this new scholarship will help those sons and daughters of fallen Canadian soldiers pursue the Canadian dream of higher education,” says Suzanne Blanchard, associate vice-president (enrolment management) and university registrar.

To be eligible, Project Hero Scholarship candidates must be:

1. A citizen or permanent resident of Canada
2. A dependant of a Canadian Forces member killed while on active duty
3. Under the age of 26
4. Registered as a full-time undergraduate student at Carleton University, in a program of study eligible for funding by the province of Ontario

“This is a great project,” says Nick Bergamini, vice president student issues of the Carleton University Students’ Association. “I am very proud to be a student at a university that values the contributions and sacrifices of the Canadian Forces members so highly.”

“We launched Project Hero with the hope that it would find support with post-secondary institutions right across Canada,” says Kevin Reed, Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 31 Brigade, Service Units and Vice Chairman of Grey Horse Corp. “Carleton is a valuable link in the national network of universities that continues to expand – I am delighted they have come on board.”
