Risking the Void: The Designs of Cameron Porteus
TORONTO - The Design Exchange is proud to announce Risking the Void: The Designs of Cameron Porteus. This exhibition celebrates the career of one of Canada’s most important sceneographers who combined an international perspective with a commitment to developing a unique style of Canadian Theatrical design during a significant period in the evolution of Canadian Theatrical history.
Porteous’ work as an artist and innovator has appeared on professional stages across the country. As head of Design at the Vancouver Playhouse in the 1970’s and later the Shaw Festival in Niagara on the lake from 1980 to 1997, he has been a major influence on the development of the art of theatre design in Canada.
The exhibition presents set and costume designs for plays, operas, musicals, TV and feature films. Drawing from the Shaw Festival at Guelph and other sources, this show illustrates the changing images of Canadian theatre. On exhibit are set and costume sketches, scenic models, selected props and costumes to uncover the full range of the complex and intriguing creative process of designing for the stage.
