The New World: Life Long Learning
by Martha George, President, GVCA

Cambridge - While you may be gearing up with "Back to School" shopping for the kids, the reality is that "learning" is continual in the working world. In our industry, where rapid changes in technology as well as workforce demographics have changed the competitive landscape, woe is he or she who isn't actively growing their mind - and their business - through educational opportunities.

What is of particular importance to our industry is Gold Seal Certification (GSC), which is the official recognition of management expertise in the construction industry.

Increasingly, owners/architects are demanding GSC qualified personnel in the RFPs; soon it will be rare to find a job site without GSC peope running the show. And this is a good thing - advanced knowledge is never a detriment and when it's combined with experience, it is simply unbeatable.

The GVCA's role is to help bring the invaluable education opportunities to its members and we have a particular focus on Gold Seal Certification. In fact, the GVCA is your Gold Seal Application reviewer and your exam centre. We urge all our members to undertake GSC courses and we do everything we can to help you achieve Gold Seal Certification.

Who Qualifies to Write the Exam

In order to qualify to write the exam, you must have a minimum of five years work experience in the construction industry in the occupation that you are applying for. A minimum of two of these years must be Canadian experience along with education credits. Trade qualifications earn you credits as well.

Internship
Another option for new employees is to enroll as an intern. To qualify, Gold Seal Intern applicants:

1. Must have had at least 5 years experience in the construction industry, and have had one year of experience in the occupation; OR,
2. Must have completed a related engineering technology/technician program and have had one year of experience in the occupation; OR,
3. Must be enrolled in an employer sponsored program (such as approved by the national Gold Seal committee and leading to the recognition as a project manager, estimator or superintendent.

20 Years Experience Earns You Sr. Practitioner Status

Of course, many of you (and your staff) may already qualify for this designation through the Senior Practitioner stream by demonstrating 20 years of experience in either Estimating, Project Management or Site Superintendent. Yes, experience counts!

GSC Info Session

If you are uncertain about your qualifications, or want more information on Gold Seal Certification, I would be happy to answer any questions, as well as giving your staff a presentation on the benefits and processes involved in GSC. We're here to help. But as the Chinese proverb says: Teachers open the door; you enter by yourself.
