Test Results for 2008/09 Meet or Exceed Provincial Averages in Seven of Eight Measures

FIVE YEAR TREND SHOWS IMPROVEMENTS AS HIGH AS 8%

Waterloo Region – The Waterloo Catholic District School Board today released its 2008-09 Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessment results for Grade 3, 6 and 9 students.

The Board’s scores meet or exceed provincial averages in seven of eight categories. In addition, the Board’s five year trend shows significant improvements in all eight measures.

The assessments in grades three and six covered reading, writing and mathematics. The grade nine assessment covered mathematics alone – at both the “applied” and the “academic” levels. The figures provided below show the percentage of the Board’s students who scored at levels three and four on a scale of one to four – thereby meeting or exceeding government expectations.

The provincial average is noted in brackets beside the WCDSB score in each assessment category below:

WCDSB Grade 3 Results: Reading 65% (61%) ---- Writing 72% (68%) ---- Mathematics 73% (70%).

WCDSB Grade 6 Results: Reading 69% (69%) ---- Writing 66% (67%) ---- Mathematics 64% (63%).

WCDSB Grade 9 Applied Level Results: Mathematics 38% (38%)

WCDSB Grade 9 Academic Level Results: Mathematics 79% (77%)

The five year trend for the Board is even more impressive. The percentage increase in the Board’s score for each category since 2005 is shown below.

WCDSB Grade 3 Results: Reading (+3%) ---- Writing (+8%) ---- Mathematics (+5%)

WCDSB Grade 6 Results: Reading (+4%) ---- Writing (+6%) ---- Mathematics (+4%)

WCDSB Grade 9 Applied Level Results: Mathematics (+2%)

WCDSB Grade 9 Academic Level Results: Mathematics (+4%)
