Ontario Power Generation celebrates 100 years of service at Seymour Generating Station

CAMPBELLFORD - A century worth of providing hydroelectric power to the people of Campbellford and surrounding area was celebrated today as John Murphy, Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Executive Vice-President Hydro and Al Reid, Manager, Central Hydro Plant Group, hosted an open house and unveiled a plaque commemorating 100 years of the supply of power from the Seymour Generating Station.

"Today's celebration is a testament to both the hard-working people of OPG who operate and maintain Seymour Generating Station as well as the public who rely on its generating capacity," said Murphy. "We at OPG look forward to providing clean, reliable hydroelectricity to the people of Campbellford and surrounding area for another 100 years."

The Seymour Generating Station (GS) was built in 1909 by the Seymour Power and Electric Company. The Hydroelectric Power Commission of Ontario acquired the station in 1916.

The Seymour GS is a part of OPG's Central Hydro Plant Group portfolio and is operated remotely from a control center in North Bay which is staffed 24/7 by a team of hydroelectric operators. The facilities are maintained by skilled trades' staff at the plant group's Campbellford Service Centre

The Seymour GS exists within the Trent River Watershed and is located on the Trent River, 2.4 km north of the town of Campbellford. Total station capacity is approximately 6MW of electricity which is capable of serving between 5,000 and 6,000 homes.

"Much of the success of Seymour GS can be attributed to the dedicated OPG staff who manages its operations," added Reid. "Its historical significance is just as important as the hydroelectric power it produces to the residents of Campbellford and surrounding area."

The celebration is part of a joint Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW)/OPG commemoration of 100 Years of Hydroelectric Generation on the Trent. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is celebrating its 10th year of serving the province. Building on a proud history, OPG provides the people and industry of Ontario with clean, safe and reliable electricity - just as it's always done.
