Academic Retiree Centre opens at University of Toronto
TORONTO, ON - The University of Toronto opened a new Academic Retiree Centre - the first time a university in Canada has created a physical space for use by its retirees.
The Centre provides retirees with continued access to space and access to UofT services such as lockers in which to store files and other personal property, bookable study carrels wired for power and direct internet access in a quiet, private workspace on the St. George campus. The offices include a comfortable and welcoming reception lounge with kitchenette facilities, acting as a social and academic networking hub as well as administrative headquarters for retiree ventures such as the newly created Senior College. Retiree centres at the Scarborough and Mississauga campuses are in the works.
A reception was held October 1, 2009 that celebrated the opening of renovated premises where retired faculty, librarians and senior administrators can continue their connection with and service to the university and carry on their scholarly and professional activities. The Academic Retiree Centre's creation acknowledges the sizeable contributions of UofT retirees--a community numbering over 1700--that benefit all.
