University of Ottawa researchers elected to the Royal Society of Canada

OTTAWA — Xiaoyi Bao and Annie Brisset, researchers at the University of Ottawa, have been elected fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in recognition of their exceptional achievements in the areas of sciences and arts and humanities, respectively.

Xiaoyi Bao, a professor in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science, holds the Canada Research Chair in Fibre Optics and Photonics. Her research interests include high-speed transmission systems using fibre optics. Bao and her team are working to develop a sensor that can measure the temperature and soundness of large structures like buildings, duct systems and oil wells in order to detect any wear in the structure’s fibre optics.

Annie Brisset is a professor at the School of Translation and Interpretation and the Department of Theatre. She is also a consultant to UNESCO on the development of multilingual communication and is a founding member of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS). Her areas of interest include sociology and sociocritique of translation, translation theories and discourse theories.

The RSC, founded in 1882, is the oldest and most prestigious academic society in the country. The Society consists of approximately 2000 fellows, men and women from across the country selected by their peers.

The University of Ottawa is committed to supporting cutting-edge research and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
