Another Big Bang for Waterloo's Perimeter Institute
Waterloo - Today, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, will receive another huge vote of confidence from the Ontario government.
The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics has 85 resident researchers and hosts hundreds of visiting international scientists each year. The institute’s approach to cutting-edge physics continues to attract leading scientists, such as Prof. Stephen Hawking, a PI Distinguished Research Chair, as well as new talent through the Perimeter Scholars International program. Perimeter is fast on its way to becoming a global hub for theoretical physics research and Ontario is committed to ensuring that it succeeds.
Today's news will be the first in a series of forthcoming infrastructure investments through the Ontario Research FundResearch Infrastructure Program, which is expected to be big, create hundreds of construction related jobs, and support the work of over 3300 scientists across the province.
“In the 21st century, economic stimulus must create jobs today and tomorrow it must be both shovels in the ground, and support for innovative people and innovative thinking. Ontario understands the value of world-class science to our economy today and for creating the jobs of the future.”
--John Milloy, Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation
“Perimeter Institute is a unique public-private partnership conducting research into the basic physics that underpins modern science and technology. We are honoured to receive this new support and determined to play our full role in making Ontario a world epicentre for science, innovation and progress.”
--Neil Turok, Director, Perimeter Institute For Theoretical Physics
§ Theoretical physics is a branch of science that deals with the nature of time, space, matter and information. Pioneers in the field include Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.
§ Past discoveries in theoretical physics have paved the way for innovations including space exploration, medical imaging, high-speed internet, global positioning systems (GPS) and smart phones.
