Infrastructure Stimulus Fund Underway in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE – Project managers, developers and constructors came together today to showcase details of the Preston Auditorium project under the federal and provincial governments’ stimulus programs.

The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science & Technology)(Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario) and Member of Parliament for Cambridge-North Dumfries; the Honourable John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Minister of Research and Innovation and Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre; and Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig were on hand, as the project received a combined federal-provincial investment of $1.6 million with a contribution of $800,000 from the City of Cambridge. Renewal of this 37 year old building, with eco-friendly enhancements based on LEED® principles, will not only benefit all residents in the City and those of neighboring communities by extending the facility’s life expectancy, but it will also benefit the local economy by creating much needed jobs. The facility will undergo renovations to the roof, rink boards, compressor, chiller, heating systems and more, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated amount of 150 tons. The work will create approximately 20,000 person hours of activity. “Our government is investing heavily in community infrastructure to create jobs, help our economy recover quickly and improve the quality of life of Canadians,” said Gary Goodyear, Member of Parliament for Cambridge-North Dumfries. “This investment in the Preston Auditorium, as well as the other arenas in our city, will generate employment now, while providing the infrastructure that Cambridge needs for years to come.” Through Canada’s 2009 Economic Action Plan, the federal government has established a

new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund that accelerates and expands an existing federal infrastructure program across Canada that provides funding to provincial, territorial, municipal and community construction-ready infrastructure projects. The Government of Ontario’s 2009 Budget invests $32.5 billion in infrastructure projects over the next two years. Both economic plans seek to create thousands of jobs and immediately strengthen our economy. “Recreation facilities are vital to the development of healthy, connected, and vibrant communities,” said John Milloy, MPP for Kitchener Centre. “Our government has made investing in these facilities, like the Preston Auditorium, a significant priority as we work to stimulate the local economy and meet the long-term infrastructure needs of our communities.” “One of the most important areas of investment for the auditorium will be much needed improvements to enhance
