Outlook for Canadian jobs declines for the second consecutive month
OTTAWA The October Canadian Job Market Report from CareerAIM was released today and indicates that the outlook for new jobs declined in most provinces for the second consecutive month.
Nationally, the number of new job noticesan indicator of future hiring intentionsdeclined between September and October, down 6.0 percent or 11,400 fewer job postings than one month earlier. Compared to September, the most significant declines were in Prince Edward Island (-9.8 percent), Nova Scotia (-8.8 percent), Newfoundland and Labrador (-7.6 percent), Quebec (-7.2 percent), Saskatchewan (-7.2 percent), British Columbia (-6.0 percent), and New Brunswick (-5.6 percent).
Nationally, the year-over-year rate of job postings improved slightly between September and October, up 4.0 percentage points from -27.5 percent in September to -23.5 percent in October. However, according to David Forster, the President of CareerAIM.com, “this is mainly because the rate of job postings declined significantly between September and October 2008, as recessionary pressures started to impact the Canadian job market.”
