Awakening The Spirit

Yoga for Peace added to annual YMCA World Peace Week activities

The Art of Peace Exhibit features visions of peace by local young artists, KW YMCA Peace Medallion Ceremony this Wednesday

Waterloo Region – The YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo, together with YMCAs across Canada, are holding YMCA World Peace Week November 21-28, 2009. The YMCA hopes to inspire and empower kids, youth and adults to make a positive impact on the lives of others locally and globally.

This year’s peace week adds Yoga for Peace on Tuesday, November 24 as a new event. The YMCAs encourage people to “awaken their spirit of peacemaking” by participating in a yoga class available free to all ages and abilities. They will take place at both the Chaplin Family YMCA at 8:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. and the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA at 10:30 a.m., 12 noon, 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. YMCAs across Canada are participating in this new activity.

Locally, YMCA World Peace Week kicks off early on Wednesday, November 18 when the Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA holds its YMCA Peace Medallion Gala at 7 p.m. in the Rotunda at Kitchener City Hall. The same event marks the official launch of “The Art of Peace” exhibit that shows the visions of peace by many local young artists. Admission is free.

The YMCA of Cambridge will combine its YMCA Peace Medallion Ceremony with a Citizenship Ceremony on Friday, November 27 at 1 p.m. at Cambridge City Hall. This event is in partnership with Citizenship & Immigration Canada. Admission is free.
