University of Toronto computer science research showcase
TORONTO - An iPhone application that conveys street map patterns to a visually impaired user using audio feedback is just one of more than 50 projects to be featured at the University of Toronto Department of Computer Science's annual Research in Action showcase on Tuesday, November 17, at the Bahen Centre for Information Technology, 40 St. George Street, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The open house event highlights 52 projects from the department's students, faculty and alumni. "These projects cover the entire spectrum of computer science," says Craig Boutilier, chair of the department, "from applications-oriented research that brings new insights to practical problems, to groundbreaking theoretical research that influences the entire discipline."
Featured projects include: research that explores the role of software in understanding and responding to the threat of climate change; a small 3D acceleration sensing package that analyzes walking; a system that enhances the privacy of personal information shared on social networking sites; and, computational tools devised to uncover genetic variation using data from the newest generation of sequencing machines.
