University of Ottawa receives more than $15 million in research funding
OTTAWA The University of Ottawa received more than $15 million in research funding as part of the Ontario Research Fund - Research Infrastructure program.
In total, the money invested will support more than 130 researchers working on 22 projects at the University of Ottawa. “This money will not only allow our researchers to develop and further their work but it also demonstrates the strength of our institution in Ontario and across the country when it comes to research,” declared Mona Nemer, uOttawa vice-president, research.
Here are some of the talented researchers whose work will benefit from the $15 million funding:
Dr. Ian Clark, professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, who is receiving $8 million to develop technologies for monitoring and protecting local groundwater sources using natural biomarkers called environmental isotopes.
Dr. Paul Corkum, professor at the Department of Physics, who is receiving $4.2 million to further his pioneering work in molecular imaging, with the goal of controlling the movements of electrons as they speed along inside molecules.
Dr. Nadine Wiper-Bergeron, professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, who is receiving over $58,000 for her research on how the body regulates the formation of fat, muscle, and bone as we age.
Today’s funding for the University of Ottawa’s researchers is part of a broader $268 million province-wide investment to support 214 projects and more than 3,300 researchers in 14 cities through the Ontario Research Fund-Research Infrastructure program.
“Our government is proud to invest in the work that our researchers are completing at our Ottawa universities,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs. “Supporting these projects will allow our researchers to develop new ideas, generate new discoveries, as well as continue to create more jobs for the people of Ottawa.”
