Economy Expands

Statscan - Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 0.1% in the third quarter, the first quarterly gain since the third quarter of 2008. Final domestic demand advanced 1.2%, as capital investment and personal expenditures both increased. Real GDP was up 0.4% in September, as most major industrial sectors increased their production.

Top Quark: The Elusive Truth - Perimeter Institute Public Lecture on December 2nd

WATERLOO - The top quark is the heaviest known type of quark, and possibly the last. Particle physicists sometimes refer to it as the "truth" quark, not always with tongue in cheek. On Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm, as part of PI's Public Lecture Series, Prof. Michael E. Peskin will review current knowledge of the top quark and explain how this knowledge has been obtained through experiments at the giant particle accelerators. Future experiments, which might reveal the top quark's deeper mysteries, will also be described.
