Top Quark: The Elusive Truth - Perimeter Institute Public Lecture on December 2nd

WATERLOO - The top quark is the heaviest known type of quark, and possibly the last. Particle physicists sometimes refer to it as the "truth" quark, not always with tongue in cheek. On Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm, as part of PI's Public Lecture Series, Prof. Michael E. Peskin will review current knowledge of the top quark and explain how this knowledge has been obtained through experiments at the giant particle accelerators. Future experiments, which might reveal the top quark's deeper mysteries, will also be described.

Michael Peskin completed his graduate study at Cornell University in 1978, held postdoctoral appointments at Harvard, C. E. N. Saclay, and Cornell, and then joined the faculty of the SLAC National Laboratory at Stanford University in 1982. His principal research interest is the question of what hypothesized new particles actually look like in accelerator experiments and how we can use accelerators to learn whether they are real.

Prof. Peskin's lecture, entitled "Top Quark: The Elusive Truth" will be held Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm in Waterloo, Ontario.
