The Hon. Stephen W. Mahoney joins WSIB and EAC on Road To Zero Injuries, Illnesses and Fatalities
WATERLOO The Employers’ Advocacy Council (EAC) of Kitchener, one of forty sanctioned Workplace Safety & Insurance Board’s (WSIB) Safety Group Sponsors, joined with the Honourable Stephen W. Mahoney, Chair, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) to discuss the Road to Zero, a Prevention Strategy for Workplace Health & Safety in Ontario and kick-off the 2009 WSIB Safety Group Program.
"My goal is to make Ontario, and by extensions in Canada, the safest workplace in the world, and I would like to thank the Employers’ Advocacy Council (EAC) and Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) for their contributions to find solutions for the common problems we face with WSIB," said WSIB chair Steve Mahoney.
On its "Road to Zero," the WSIB runs high-profile and striking public awareness campaigns to help eliminate workplace injuries and fatalities in Ontario. Ontario's WSIB plays a key role in the province's occupational health and safety system. The WSIB administers no-fault workplace insurance for employers and their workers and is committed to the prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses. The WSIB provides disability benefits, monitors the quality of healthcare, and assists in early and safe return to work for workers who are injured on the job or contract an occupational disease.
The Safety Groups Program (SGP) is an important component of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board’s (WSIB) prevention incentive programs. It provides a unique opportunity for communicating, training and sharing best practices in health and safety to help eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses in Ontario
The SGP rewards firms that implement effective health and safety and return to work measures into their daily business. The program provides firms with the opportunity to train, communicate and evaluate an action plan that fits their individual needs and as such reduces the risk of injury.
In addition to a potential 6% maximum rebate of group premiums for eligible firms, safety group members also gain access to health and safety resources, enhanced public perception, healthy and stable workforces, increased productivity, improved quality and increased employee morale.
The Employers’ Advocacy Council of Kitchener has 143 different organizations participating in the 2009 Safety Group program and as noted by Fred Spiro, Executive Director of EAC, “in reaching the goal of the Road To Zero, we believe that your success is our success.”
