Carleton Professor Investigates the Secret Life of Software
Ottawa Dr. Robert Biddle is researching the secret life of software. “I look at how software can work in rich and subtle ways with human expression and human behavior,” explains Dr. Biddle. “My research concentrates on areas where these can be critical factors, such as in computer security.”
Prof. Biddle is one of the researchers working with the recently announced NSERC Digital Surface Software Application Network (SurfNet). The collaborators will improve the development, performance and usability of software applications for surface computing environments such as non-traditional digital display surfaces, including multi-touch screens, tabletops and wall-sized displays.
Dr. Biddle leads the project on Security and Privacy in New Media Environments for the GRAND Network Centre of Excellence that was announced last December. This network will use novel social media, e-learning and edutainment environments to enhance learning and skills development.
Prof. Biddle grew up in Ottawa, but has spent most of his working life in New Zealand before returning to Ottawa in 2004. He is a professor in the School of Computer Science as well as a member of the Institute of Cognitive Science. In February, Carleton announced a unique new master’s degree in cognitive science.
