A New Belonging: Street Gang Prevention in Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region – On Thursday, April 22, 2010, the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council presents the 32nd Annual Justice Dinner featuring John Calhoun, of the California Cities Gang Prevention Network, Founding CEO of America’s National Crime Prevention Council, and author of “Hope Matters” (2007). This year’s theme “A New Belonging: Street Gang Prevention in Waterloo Region” complements a Street Gang Prevention Project that was launched in Waterloo Region in the fall of 2009.

An internationally renowned public speaker, John Calhoun, is senior consultant to the California Cities Gang Prevention Network. For 20 years, Jack served as President and CEO of the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), America’s focal point for prevention. And in 2007 he published a book “Hope Matters.” Mr. Calhoun will look at successful policies and practices that interweave prevention, intervention, enforcement, and a community's "moral voice" as an alternative to prison-only solutions.

Janine Grespan of CTV Television will be the Master of Ceremonies. The Annual Justice Dinner is attended by local dignitaries, community agencies, organizations, and community members.

Tickets are $50.00 each and can be reserved online at www.preventingcrime.ca or by calling 519-883-2304. RSVP deadline is Friday, April 9, 2010.

The Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council is a community collaborative that works to reduce and prevent crime, victimization and fear of crime. It is an advisory committee to the Region of Waterloo and consists of 45 members representing the community-at -large, social services, education, health, planning, justice, police, and community agencies among others.
