Exhibit showcasing renowned Chinese photographers to be displayed at Laurier

WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University will showcase photographs from the album China’s Renowned Photographers Focus on China March 23-24.

The photo exhibition will open Tuesday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. with a reception in Laurier’s Schlegel Building atrium. Remarks from City of Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran, and representatives from Laurier and China, will commence at 7 p.m.

The photos will be available for public viewing Tuesday, March 23 to Wednesday, March 24, in Laurier’s Schlegel Building atrium.

The China’s Renowned Photographers Focus on China album was launched in Beijing June 1, 2009. It is the first album published to commemorate the 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, and consists of 362 photographs from 248 renowned photographers representing every province in China.

One hundred photos from the album have been selected to tour Canada and the United States. Laurier is one of only five tour stops, which also includes Toronto, New York, Washington DC, and Victoria, BC.

“Laurier has been selected by the organizers to host the exhibit in recognition of our recent efforts to engage faculty and students with leading universities in China,” said Peter Donahue, director of Laurier International.

Donahue said the photos are important because they depict the enormous changes that have taken place in China over the past 60 years.

“A big change in China over the past 60 years, equivalent to more than 200 years of change in many other countries,” said Zhu Ling, editor-in-chief of the newspaper China Daily. “All these changes are reflected in our habits and way of life, in little details of life in urban and rural areas, such as our basic necessities and our emotions. Although 60 years is only one drop water in the river of our long history, it contains a great era of ever-changing, and we set this album as the witness of these changes.”

The event is sponsored by China Daily and AKD International Inc., in cooperation with Laurier International.
