Local community foundation grants close to $607,000 during challenging times
Waterloo - The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF) awarded almost $607,000 in grants during 2009 to support local non profit and charitable organizations in Kitchener-Waterloo and area.
It has been a challenging year for the non profit community,” says Rosemary Smith, CEO of The KWCF. “We know that charitable organizations have felt the effects of leaner budgets, increased needs, and decreased funding.”
The KWCF distributed funds to a diverse number of projects and programs including the Wellesley and District Lions Club’s Splash Park Project. In an effort to revitalize park space and encourage physical activity amongst children, the Club hopes the Splash Park will also be a gathering place for neighbours and friends. Says Dr. Jennifer Kays-Sommer, Lions Club member and Splash Park Coordinator; “This project is the largest one our Club has ever undertaken and we would not be able to succeed without the help of The KWCF - Thank you to The Foundation for believing in our vision."
Another grant was made to Lutherwood for the improvement of restroom facilities at Safe Haven Shelter a program that provides support to children aged 12-15 who are at risk of homelessness. “In order for us to maintain our license as a children’s residence, the bathrooms needed significant upgrades to meet health, safety, and accessibility requirements,” says Donna Buchan, Director of Development at Lutherwood. “Fixing up old bathrooms is a project in which many funders would not be interested. However, the grant has helped address basic needs for safety and shelter for troubled children in our community and we are so fortunate that The KWCF values its importance.”
In total 135 grants were made in 2009 to 90 different non profit and charitable organizations in our community.
“We want the community to know that we continue to be here as a strong voice, partner, funder, and advocate for philanthropy,” adds Smith. “As the economy improves, so will our ability to make a difference where it is needed most.”
