Desire2Learn Leads the Way with Certification for IMS Basic Learning Tools Interoperability
First LMS to attain certification for IMS Basic Learning Tools Interoperability as a Tool Consumer
Kitchener-Waterloo Desire2Learn Incorporated announced its certification for IMS Basic Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) as a Tool Consumer, becoming the first Learning Management System (LMS) provider to do so. The certification applies to both Desire2Learn® Learning Environment 8.4.2 and the newly released 9.0.
Desire2Learn is committed to providing support for the creation and market adoption of standards and specifications that improve teaching and learning. Integrations to external learning tools can be accomplished without the need for custom development or proprietary single sign-on implementations.
IMS developed LTI to enable remote tools and content to be easily integrated into an LMS. The IMS Common Cartridge Accredited Profile Management Group has approved the Basic LTI conformance tests in order for vendors to pursue certification.
The LTI specification permits the seamless connection of web-based, externally hosted applications and content, or Tools (from simple communication applications like chat, to domain-specific learning environments for complex subjects like math or science) to platforms, or Tool Consumers, that present them to users. This enables secure connectivity to learning/course management systems, portals, etc. in standard ways without having to develop and maintain custom integrations.
"Basic LTI significantly lowers the barriers for tool providers to integrate seamlessly with course management systems," says Rob Abel, Chief Executive of IMS Global Learning Consortium. "Desire2Learn is to be congratulated for being among the first to achieve Basic LTI conformance in its released products and enabling their customers to be among the first to benefit."
The development of LTI support by leading collaboration solutions providers, such as Desire2Learn Select Partner Wimba, validates the adoption of the LTI implementation. Wimba is currently developing integration with Desire2Learn as a Tool Provider using Basic LTI.
"Being the first LMS with certified support for IMS Basic LTI is another great milestone in Desire2Learn's ongoing mission to transform teaching and learning," states Jeremy Auger, Chief Operating Officer, Desire2Learn. "Support of IMS Basic LTI enables Desire2Learn users to very quickly integrate complimentary learning technologies with just a few clicks. The Desire2Learn team is looking forward to working with a growing list of partners supporting the IMS Basic LTI specification."
