Laurier creates new honour to recognize outstanding contributions to the university
WATERLOO Wilfrid Laurier University has created a new honour to recognize members of the Laurier community who make outstanding contributions to the university, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary as a post-secondary institution in 2011.
The Order of Wilfrid Laurier University will recognize worthy individuals who have a record of exemplary and distinguished service to the university. Eligible recipients include current or former faculty, staff, students, alumni, volunteers, and friends of the university.
Laurier awards honorary degrees to individuals from Canada and abroad who make significant contributions to society at a national or international level. The Order of Wilfrid Laurier University is intended to recognize people who make outstanding contributions specifically to the university.
“Laurier’s ability to combine academic excellence with a vibrant sense of community and social engagement has been a defining characteristic of this institution for nearly 100 years,” said president and vice-chancellor Max Blouw. “The Order of Wilfrid Laurier University will help us honour the dedicated individuals who enable this remarkable university to inspire lives of leadership and purpose.”
The nomination and selection process for the new award will be the same as for honorary degrees: nominations will be considered by the university’s Senate honorary degree committee, which will then make recommendations to the Senate executive committee. Once approved, nominees shall be placed on a reserve list, for a period of five years, during which time the president of the university may select individual nominees from the list for the award.
Recipients will receive the Order of Wilfrid Laurier University at a spring or fall convocation ceremony. The award will consist of a diploma suitably inscribed, a pin denoting membership in the order, and a citation to be read at the convocation ceremony at which the award is presented. The recipient may also be invited to address convocation.
The university is now accepting nominations for the Order of Wilfrid Laurier University and plans to honour the first recipients at Laurier’s fall convocation in October 2010. For information on how to submit a nomination, click here.
