Robert W. Boyd and Nicolas D. Georganas receive coveted Humboldt Research Award

OTTAWA — The University of Ottawa continues to demonstrate its leadership in research as two of its eminent professors are conferred the Humboldt Research Award.

Robert W. Boyd, newly recruited by the University of Ottawa, is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Quantum Nonlinear Optics. Professor Boyd received a PhD in physics from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was supervised by Nobel Prize Professor Charles H. Townes. Boyd’s research has spanned topics as diverse as physics, engineering, fundamental and applied research as well as classical and quantum nonlinear optics—a field that combines nonlinear optics with quantum optics.

Nicolas D. Georganas is a distinguished university professor at the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) and was the founding dean of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Engineering. His basic research is in ambient multimedia information systems, collaborative virtual environments and sensor networks, with applications in modelling and simulation of complex industrial, medical, e-commerce and emergency response training systems.

The Humboldt Research Award, granted by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany, recognizes researchers whose discoveries, new theories or insights have had a significant impact in their own discipline and who are expected to continue being a cutting-edge researcher.
