July Housing Starts Higher in Kitchener

TORONTO - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released July preliminary housing starts data for the Kitchener Census Metropolitan Area(1) (CMA). Construction began on 289 homes, up from the 260 units started in the same month last year.

Foundations were laid for 95 single-detached homes in July, on par with the 94 units started in July 2009. While townhome and semi-detached starts increased marginally, the higher number of apartment starts pulled total starts higher. The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo were the only municipalities with higher starts. In the first seven months of 2010, construction began on 1,856 homes, up strongly from the 1,091 units started in the same period of 2009.
