Waterloo Region celebrates healthy workplaces

Waterloo Region - Region of Waterloo Public Health launched Waterloo Region’s Healthy Workplace Awards Program in October 2009. This program recognizes and celebrates workplaces in Waterloo Region who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the health of their employees.

The 1st annual awards celebration is being held in October 2010 during Healthy Workplace Month. This awareness month is dedicated to encouraging Canadian organizations to promote the benefits of workplace health.

“Workplaces are in a unique position to be leaders in supporting healthy lifestyles of their employees and the people they serve,” says Sharlene Sedgwick Walsh, Director of the Healthy Living, Planning and Promotion Division. “Workplace wellness programs and policies that businesses and organizations put in place recognize that the health and well-being of their employees is paramount and contribute to the health of the community as a whole.”

Through adopting a comprehensive workplace health promotion approach to wellness programming, workplaces may receive one of the three award levels (bronze, silver or gold). “In order to make the greatest impact on the wellness of employees and the company, a variety of health promotion strategies should be considered and applied in wellness planning and programming,” says Sharlene Sedgwick Walsh.

Attendees at the awards ceremony to be held this fall will include invited guests only, media, Waterloo Region’s Medical Officer of Health, other Regional dignitaries, and the businesses and organizations being recognized.
