Kitchener – The Waterloo Regional Labour Council will launch its “Better Choices Waterloo Region” campaign on Tuesday, October 12, as its way of promoting the twenty-three candidates it has endorsed for the October 25, 2010 election.

The campaign will kick off with the launching of its website – www.betterchoiceswaterlooregion.com – which contains information about how the candidates were selected and why.

The new global economy and the recession have drastically changed the world around us. Our new municipal councilors must demand that the provincial and federal governments provide adequate and stable funding for the important services municipalities provide. Councils should begin by leading the way in eliminating wage inequalities, the root cause of many of the social problems cities face. For example, municipalities need to adopt a procurement policy that states our tax dollars will support local businesses whenever possible.

The Labour Council looked for candidates who supported these priorities. We believe we have found candidates who are progressive, creative, innovative, and determined, and who will build the vibrant, thriving communities we all deserve.

In making its endorsement selections, the Labour Council sent a questionnaire to each candidate who had registered before September 1st, 2010. Forty-six different candidates took the initiative to complete the questionnaire. Their responses were evaluated by a committee of the Labour Council, and the Council approved twenty three endorsements at its September meeting.

The candidates we elect will have a direct effect on our region for the next four years. Municipalities matter! Make your voice heard on October 25th. And make the Better Choices.
