Waterloo improves website accessibility

Waterloo -The City of Waterloo launched a new assistive technology tool on its website called BrowseAloud to ensure citizens can easily access information online. BrowseAloud works by reading website content aloud and highlighting each word as it is spoken. This audio- visual reinforcement helps users to track words as they are spoken, improving comprehension and word recognition. It is available in nine international languages including English and French.

“This technology is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to create a barrier-free city for our community,” said Mayor Brenda Halloran.

In addition to its main functionality, BrowseAloud also provides users with a number of unique tools, such as a translator, a talking dictionary, text magnification and the ability to have Microsoft Word documents, PDF documents and forms read aloud.

BrowseAloud is available free of charge to all users and can be downloaded by following the links on the city’s website at www.waterloo.ca or directly from www.browsealoud.com.
