Earth Day

St. Louis English as a Second Language Students Acknowledge Water as the Next Big Global Crisis: Earth Day Awareness

Waterloo – The Waterloo Catholic District School Board, continually works with our school communities to create environmental awareness on such topics as car idling, creating urban green space on school properties and limited recyclable water bottle use, to name a few.

In an early acknowledgement of Earth Day, April 23rd, a class of adult English as a Second Language students at St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres, 82 Beverly Street, Cambridge have taken the reusable containers for beverages issue seriously. Free coffee will be served to students who bring a reusable travel mug and 1800 recyclable water bottles will be on public display in front of the school. Each bottle represents 20 million bottles thrown away every year (www.canadians.org)

An article entitled “Water: Canada’s most precious resource” by Ontario Reader, 2001 was the catalyst for this action taken by students. Considering many people learning English as a Second Language were at some time, newcomers to Canada, raising awareness of water as both a Canadian issue and a global issue became a common topic in their learning.
