Plenty of robots can fly -- but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings.

National drowning prevention week promotes lifejackets for boaters

KITCHENER – At the mid-summer mark, the Lifesaving Society reports that none of the 12 victims of this summer’s boating fatalities were wearing a lifejacket. This continues the trend from 2010 when 22 of 23 boaters who drowned in Ontario (from May 1– September 30) were found not wearing a lifejacket.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation wants the University to write the traditional latrine a “Dear John” letter

TORONTO, ON – I hope you’re sitting down – here’s a challenge for you. Design a toilet that’s off-the-grid – no running water, no sewerage system, no electricity. Make sure it’s self-contained: human waste goes in; clean water, carbon dioxide, mineral ash (for fertilizer) and energy comes out, in about 24 hours. Oh yes, and it has to work for only five cents per user, per day. That’s the problem the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation put in front of leading universities worldwide through the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge.


Power restored to communities impacted by forest fires in northwestern Ontario

TORONTO - Hydro One confirms that it restored power to communities that have been impacted by forest fires in northwestern Ontario. Restoring power involved rebuilding parts of a power line that serves communities including Pickle Lake, and Slate Falls, Cat Lake, and Mishkeegogamang First Nations.
