Volleyball Club Receives Inaugural True Sport Grant Award

Cambridge/Kitchener - The Hespeler Scorpions Youth Volleyball Club has been awarded a grant under the Waterloo Region True Sport Grant Program administered by The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation.

The Scorpions Youth Volleyball Club has been given $730 to develop and deliver a Monsters Scorpions Learn to Play Volleyball Program aimed at teaching younger children the basics of volleyball in a fun and safe environment.

The Hespeler Scorpions Volleyball Club was started in August 2010 to get kids physically active by providing beach and indoor volleyball programs in Cambridge and the surrounding area. The results have been amazing. In just 10 months, over 200 kids have registered in the various Scorpions programs. It is anticipated there will be a 50% growth in registrants in the fall winter season this year.

Paul Langan, founder of Scorpions Volleyball Club states, “The grant from the True Sport Grant Program is much needed. Volleyball is not introduced into the school physical education classes until children are 11 and 12 years old. The grant will allow us to purchase appropriate size volleyballs and shirts to run a Monster Scorpions Learn to Play Program for youth ages 7-8.”

As a result of this award, the cost for youth to register in this program will be free. The program will run eight weeks from October to December 2010. Registration will be available on the Scorpions website starting on August 5th, 2011 at http://scorpionsvolleyball.ca. Registration in person can be done August 27 and 28 at the Cambridge Centre Mall.
