TITANIC HUGE SUCCESS FOR THEMUSEUM
Infamous ship leaves lasting impression on Region
KITCHENER - Following four months of hosting Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, THEMUSEUM is pleased to share its many successes.
Supported by BMO Financial Group and local Municipalities, THEMUSEUM was able to bring a world class exhibition to the heart of the Waterloo Region while bringing together many different parts of the community, and once again strengthening the spirit of collaboration in the Region.
Most telling of the exhibition’s success was the demand in the final weeks as online timed tickets consistently began selling out. To accommodate the demand THEMUSEUM held an incredible 36 hour Titanic Marathon from January 21st at 10am until January 22nd at 10pm. Each hour from 9pm through 2am sold out and the exhibition was never empty from 3am until 7am when it sold out by the hour again. In total more than 5000 people visited THEMUSEUM in 36 hours, with an additional 2000 on the final Sunday.
THEMUSEUM Speaker Series featured 10 experts ranging from nautical and historical backgrounds to a food expert discussing menus from Titanic which was followed by an Afternoon Tea Party. In December, with the assistance of Christie Digital Systems Inc., THEMUSEUM hosted An Evening with Jon Landau, the Academy Award winning producer which sold out in less than a day.
“The success of Titanic, on so many cultural levels, is something our community can be proud of,” explains David Marskell, CEO. “The Speakers Series, Jon Landau, the fact that 20% of our visitors were seniors, that 49% of our school groups attended Titanic as part of their visit and everything in between made this exhibition at THEMUSEUM something this community won’t soon forget. We were also able to break barriers shifting paradigms that brought hundreds of people downtown at night and thousands of people from outside the community”.
For the first time visitors were offered online ticket sales which allowed orderly sell outs of specific hours in advance assisting plans for staffing and the flow of visitors.
Corporations and local businesses also boosted the attendance by signing up for online Promo Codes offering their employees discounted advance tickets. In addition there were 20 rental evenings as well as other special events offered during the almost four month run.
In total, THEMUSEUM hosted 44, 351 visitors through its doors during Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, with 30% from outside of Waterloo Region. Many day- trippers and some who stayed overnight were visible in neighbouring restaurants, hotels and gas stations.
“I believe success of this measure is a triumph for the entire community and I along with the fantastic staff will continue to work hard making THEMUSEUM relevant to the widest possible group of visitors putting us and this Region on a much larger cultural map”.
