Region to host live webcast for rapid transit public consultation

Kitchener – The Region of Waterloo is inviting residents to participate in the rapid transit public consultation process from the comfort of their own homes. On March 2, 2011, the Region is hosting an interactive webcast from 7 to 8 p.m. A panel of Regional staff with expertise in engineering, transportation planning and community planning will participate in a discussion about the history, status and next steps of the rapid transit project with local radio personality Mike Farwell. The discussion will be broadcast live over the internet, and those watching will be encouraged to submit their own questions.

Waterloo Region Technological Skills Elementary Competition 2011 Results

Waterloo – More than 700 local elementary school students participated in the WATERLOO REGION TECHNOLOGICAL SKILLS ELEMENTARY COMPETITION -- February 24-25, 2011 at Conestoga College. The competition offered five different technology challenges for students in Grades 4-6 and 7-8. The Waterloo Catholic District School Board was very successful with 24 teams winning gold, silver or bronze.

Lloyd Axworthy to speak at Laurier’s Global Citizenship Conference

WATERLOO – The Hon. Lloyd Axworthy, former federal minister of foreign affairs, will be the keynote speaker at Wilfrid Laurier University’s annual Global Citizenship Conference March 5. The theme of this year’s conference is “Canada’s International Image.” The theme of this year’s conference is “Canada’s International Image.” Panel discussions and workshops focused on this theme will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and conclude with the keynote presentation by Axworthy at 6 p.m. in Laurier’s Arts building room 1E1. There will also be a non-governmental organization networking fair from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.

TORONTO - "In sickness and in health" may apply to marriage, but it's also an increasingly common workplace vow, a new Accountemps survey reveals. Fifty-one per cent of employees admitted to going into work when feeling under the weather. Fifty-seven per cent of workers interviewed said when a colleague comes in sick, however, they worry most about being exposed to his or her illness; only 11 per cent are impressed by their coworker's dedication.

OMERS Net Assets Exceed $53 Billion in 2010

Plan Has Grown by Close to $10 Billion Since 2008 Global Financial Crisis

TORONTO - OMERS announced its net assets rose to $53.3 billion as of December 31, 2010, up from $47.8 billion the year before. The total rate of return in 2010 was 12.01 per cent, compared to 10.6 per cent in 2009. The Plan's growth in net assets for 2009 and 2010 combined was $9.9 billion.

A new class of cement with strong environmental and sustainable construction credentials can now be used in Ontario and Quebec

MISSISSAUGA - A new class of cement called Portland-limestone cement will become mainstream in Ontario and Quebec. The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing recently announced that PLC is referenced in the Ontario Building Code. In Quebec, the Régie du Bâtiment approved PLC as an 'alternative solution' to General Use cement. Holcim (Canada) Inc.'s cement plants in Mississauga, Ontario and Joliette, Quebec, manufacture PLC and have been supplying the materials for customer trials with ready-mix producers and concrete product manufacturers in both provinces.
