New technologies that help anticipate the international spread of infectious diseases could benefit hosts of future mass gatherings like the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games
New York - Coupling surveillance systems that use the internet to detect infectious disease outbreaks around the world in near real-time with novel technology that tracks and predicts global population movements through commercial air travel, could create new opportunities for hosts of mass gatherings (MGs) to better prepare for and respond to infectious disease threats, according to the fifth paper in The Lancet Infectious Diseases Series on MGs health. An analysis of potential threats to the 2012 Olympic Games using this novel approach is described in the paper.

New York - Understanding the movement and behaviour of crowds is essential to minimising health hazards at mass gatherings (MGs). Computer models that provide accurate simulations of how crowds behave can be used to identify health and safety issues at MGs, and could be adapted to simulate the spread of infections and to test the potential of public health interventions to disrupt or prevent an outbreak, according to the fourth paper in The Lancet Infectious Diseases Series on mass gatherings health.

Biodiversity Decline on the Oak Ridges Moraine
King City - More than 23 municipalities located on the Oak Ridges Moraine are calling on the Government of Ontario to continue funding the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation, a non-profit agency that serves as the eyes and ears of the moraine, often described as the rain barrel for southern Ontario. Financial support for the Foundation runs out at the end of this fiscal year and its renewal is far from certain.
