Waterloo The Board of Directors of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) nnounced that, acting on the recommendation of its Co-Chief Executive Officers to implement the succession plan they previously submitted to the Board, it has unanimously named Thorsten Heins as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Heins was also appointed to RIM’s Board. The Board acted after conducting its own due diligence. Both appointments are effective immediately.

I QC postdoctoral fellow Anne Broadbent (left), an postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Computing, is part of an international research team to have achieved a breakthrough in perfectly secure "cloud computing" using principles of quantum mechanics. The result, published today in the journal Science, represents a crucial step toward secure globalized quantum computing.Quantum computers are expected to revolutionize information processing, since they are known to outperform their present-day “classical” counterparts at many tasks. First-generation quantum computers will likely be housed in a few specialized facilities, and therefore computation will be done in the “cloud”

Consumer Price Index for December 2011
Statscan - Consumer prices rose 2.3% in the 12 months to December, following a 2.9% increase in November. The 0.6 percentage point difference was led by a slower increase in gasoline prices as well as declines for the purchase of passenger vehicles. A slower year-over-year increase for food was also a factor.
