New NRC Program to Reinforce the Quality, Safety, and Effectiveness of Natural Health Products

Strengthening Canada's Natural Health Products Industry

HALIFAX - Canadian companies developing natural health products will be able to get science-proven, competitive new products on shelves faster, with the help of a new program from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) dedicated to supporting this growing industry.

"Canadian consumers are more informed than ever before, and are demanding safer and higher-quality natural health products," said Denise LeBlanc, General Manager of Aquatic and Crop Resource Development at the National Research Council of Canada. "With our technical expertise, companies will be able to develop innovative products that meet consumer needs and get them to market quicker for Canadians."

The Natural Health Products program announced today is designed to enhance Canada's global competitive position in the Natural Health Product and Functional Ingredient industries by providing custom research and technology solutions for companies looking to develop and test new or existing products.

With this program, NRC offers clients custom analytical, preclinical and lab-scale research and development services, as well as access to advanced research equipment and experts with industry-relevant experience and a track record of success. The result will be safe, effective natural health products and functional ingredients primarily derived from Canadian natural bioresources, such as agricultural crops and residues, fisheries products, microalgae and seaweed.

In addition to a core multidisciplinary team of some 30 researchers based in Charlottetown, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Saskatoon, clients and collaborators will have ready access to all of NRC's world-class facilities conveniently located at sites across the country.
