Outwater and the KW Symphony: Truly Exciting 2013/14 Season

Kitchener/Waterloo - Music Director Edwin Outwater and Executive Director Genevieve Twomey announced the 2013/14 Season of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS). The upcoming Season includes vibrant and dynamic programming and a few surprises that will inspire, entertain and transport audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds. In addition to launching the 2013/14 Season, the KWS announced a new mobile website that will allow patrons to access concert information and purchase tickets from their smartphones.

In its 68th season, the KWS will present over 70 concert performances across eight distinct series with more than 35 special guest artists and over 180 works of music.

“This will be Edwin’s seventh season as Music Director with the KWS. In this season he will continue to present creative programming that surprises and captivates, inspires and entertains,” said Twomey. “Each season our goal is to present a diverse range of concerts with something for everyone and the 2013/14 season is no exception.”

The Season will open with a gala celebration: A Beautiful Night with Natalie MacMaster. This unique evening will feature the KWS in concert with Nova Scotia powerhouse MacMaster at the Centre In The Square, followed by a joyous Cape Breton style ceilidh at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts.

“I am so excited about our 2013/14 Season,” said Outwater. “This Season we will move through a vast landscape of sounds and experiences from Brahms and Beethoven to ambient electronica to music and meditation. It’s always a joy when I get to share my plans for the season with our community.”

The KWS is pleased to welcome back Sun Life Financial for the eighth straight year as Season Sponsor. “After hearing about this year’s diverse and creative concert schedule, we are excited to continue supporting the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony as Season Sponsor,” says Mary De Paoli, Executive Vice-President, Public and Corporate Affairs and Chief Marketing Officer, Sun Life Financial. “Sun Life Financial is committed to connecting with people through arts and culture in the communities where we live and work. The Symphony’s dynamic programming is sure to enrich the lives of those who attend these performances and will contribute to making the Waterloo Region a more vibrant cultural community.”

The 2013/14 Signature Series will showcase the artistry and flexibility of the KWS alongside world-class soloists including Jon Kimura Parker, piano and Karen Gomyo, violin. The series opens with Anton Kuerti’s return to the KWS to play Beethoven’s sparkling and elegant Piano Concerto No. 1. Masterworks on the series include Mozart, Symphony No. 40; Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6, Pathétique; Bernstein, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, among others. The series concludes with the infectious rhythms of Stravinsky’s imaginative Petrushka.

The Pops Series is all about entertainment; beginning with MacMaster the series will also feature the Latin sounds of Tiempo Libre, The Music of ABBA, the Music of John Williams and Steven Spielberg, a Ray Charles Tribute, Superhero scores and the return of the enormously popular Yuletide Spectacular.

The always innovative Intersections Series continues to push boundaries with adventurous performances and unexpected collaborations. The series begins with an Intersections Encore concert featuring some favourites from the past five years: Lizée, ‘2012: Triple Concerto for Power Trio: Fantasia on Themes by Rush’ and two epic orchestral works by indie superstar Dan Deacon, written especially for the KWS. The program will also be presented at Koerner Hall in Toronto. The series will continue with an unconventional concert of engaged listening and mindful movement guided by mindfulness educator Meaghan Johnson and oboist Brian Seaton, and an exploration of Electronica with two of the genre’s most celebrated artists, Daniel Lopatin and Tim Hecker.

The Baroque & Beyond Series takes on a new format this season and will be curated by members of the KWS; Ian Whitman, James Mason, Nancy Wharton and Allene Chomyn. Edwin Outwater will conduct a program of Concerto grossi, his first appearance on this series. The KWS will also welcome back guest conductors Eric Paetkau and Joseph Lanza.

A Saturday morning tradition, Kinderconcerts, will continue to be presented at both the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts and the Waterloo Region Museum. The Saturday afternoon Family Series, led by Assistant Conductor Evan Mitchell, shares the joy of orchestral music with the whole family.

Additional season highlights include two special concerts, PIXAR in Concert and Ballroom with a Twist. PIXAR in concert features visually stunning clips and memorable scores from each of Pixar’s movies. Ballroom with a Twist was choreographed by Louis van Amstel and features cast members from Dancing With The Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol.

“Each year the announcement of our upcoming season marks an important moment for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony” said Twomey. “We are so proud of the incredible range of programming we offer in this region and are pleased to share what we have planned for audiences in the coming year. We welcome everyone and invite everyone to ‘Do Something Great Tonight’.”

The KWS would like to thank the following sponsors: Season: Sun Life Financial; Signature Series: The Economical Insurance Group; Music Director Edwin Outwater’s Podium Sponsor: BMO Financial Group; Pops Series: Heffner Lexus; Gala: BMO Harris Private Banking; Family Series: Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc.; Baroque & Beyond Series: Karen Wilkinson; Matinée Series: The Dunfield Retirement Residence; Intersections Series co-title sponsors: The C3 Group and KPMG.
