Local service clubs support childhood arthritis backpack program

March is Childhood Arthritis Awareness Month

Kitchener - The Arthritis Society - Ontario announced Friday the support of five Waterloo Region service clubs in purchasing special backpacks for local children with arthritis. Thanks to the Optimist Club of Lakeshore Village, the Optimist Club of West Cambridge, Optimist Club of Kitchener – Southwest, Bridgeport Lions Club and Elmira Lions Club, six children under 10 recently diagnosed with arthritis will receive backpacks designed to relieve joints that are sore and inflamed, as well as distribute weight appropriately. Each is filled with resources to improve the child’s quality of life.

“Arthritis doesn’t discriminate by age and for children it can be a particularly trying time to suddenly have their school and social life interrupted,” said Jennifer Murray, Manager of Community Development for the Grand River region. “For kids with arthritis, participating in typical activities can be hard or impossible because of pain, swelling and disability. These backpacks are meant to relieve some burden.”

To inquire about backpacks, please contact the local Arthritis Society branch at 519-743-4141.

Up to 24,000 Canadians 18 and younger have arthritis. March is Childhood Arthritis Month, where the spotlight shines on them, their families, and the pediatric rheumatologists who care for them. Visit www.arthritis.ca/childhood for more details.
