Laurier to host Chengdu University faculty for training on teaching and learning

WATERLOO – A delegation of 15 faculty members from Chengdu University in China will be visiting Wilfrid Laurier University to participate in a training program focused on student-centered approaches to teaching from July 25 to August 21.

Laurier faculty and staff members will be facilitating training sessions, focusing on many classroom practices that reflect Laurier’s unique integrated and engaged approach to teaching and learning. Chengdu University’s faculty members are interested in developing an understanding of Laurier’s approach to teaching, which emphasizes utilizing classroom time for problem solving and deeper interactions with the course material, instead of the traditional “lecturing” mode of teaching. The training will incorporate interactive sessions for faculty members to actively engage with the material and discover how they can relate it back to their courses in China.

During their visit, Laurier and Chendgu University faculty members will also discuss the importance of educational institutions understanding teaching approaches across cultures and how to integrate international perspectives into teaching and learning. The universities hope to build a strong relationship and develop an international exchange where ideas surrounding teaching and learning can be shared after the training is completed.

“We are very much looking forward to spending time with the faculty from Chengdu University,” said Sandy Hughes, director: Centre for Teaching Innovation and Excellence. “This will be a learning experience for all Laurier faculty and staff involved in delivering the program and we hope that this training program will lead to additional opportunities to work and learn with international colleagues.”

The training program is hosted by Laurier’s Centre for Teaching Innovation and Excellence and Laurier International.

Laurier’s Centre for Teaching Innovation and Excellence is committed to promoting a culture of teaching and learning to the Laurier community. The centre supports innovation and excellence in teaching and learning at all levels of the university, providing opportunities for professional and personal development.

Laurier International encourages, promotes and seeks opportunities for members of the Laurier community to effectively pursue their interests and careers in a globalized world and enhance their international and intercultural competencies.
