Tacofest raises funds for Meals on Wheels
Waterloo Region - We are proud to announce the third annual Waterloo Region Tacofest has raised over $29,000 for Community Support Connections Meals on Wheels and More (CSC). Since the inception of Tacofest in 2013, the event has raised $66,000 for local seniors and adults with disabilities by supporting CSC’s Meal Subsidy Program.
On Friday July 3rd more than 500 attendees packed into THEMUSEUM downtown Kitchener to sample tacos and beer donated by 11 local restaurants and 12 Ontario craft brewers.
The event is also a competition with Taco Farm taking home The Golden Taco Trophy for their second time in three years, awarded by the event’s judging panel.
Public Kitchen & Bar received the most votes from the crowd securing their place as the winner of The People’s Taco, and Wildcraft was voted in as the winner of The Vegetarian Victor.
And for the first time, a beer panel awarded the Best Brew to Lake of Bays Brewing for their 10 point IPA tequila edition.
Due to an exhibit change at the venue, organizers were able to use an extra floor at THEMUSEUM resulting in four additional vendors to serve 90 more patrons than in previous years, helping the event’s bottom line.
“We’re really appreciative of the generosity of our local restaurants and the brewers, we absolutely couldn’t do this event without them, and it was important to us that we didn’t increase the ask of them when increasing our size,” said Rosalind Horne, Resource Development Lead for CSC.
The fundraiser started after the local charity held Waterloo Region’s Next Big Event contest, receiving 29 ideas before narrowing it down to six and asking the community to vote for their favourite.
Last year tickets sold out in three minutes online, and this year’s first batch sold out in under a minute before adding the 90 additional tickets once the extra space was available.
