Guelph Hydro preparing to switch customers to monthly billing

Change will impact Guelph and Rockwood customers’ payment due dates

GUELPH – Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. is making preparations to switch residential and small commercial customers in Guelph and Rockwood from bi-monthly bills to monthly bills on a phased-in basis starting in November 2015. This means that customers will be required to pay their Guelph Hydro bill every month instead of every two months.

“A more timely, monthly bill will benefit customers,” says Christina Koren, Manager of Customer Service and Billing for Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. “By providing customers with detailed information about their electricity use on a monthly basis, customers will have more of an opportunity to monitor their consumption and make changes, if desired, to better manage their electricity costs.”

All electrical utility customers across Ontario will be switching to monthly billing by December 31, 2016. This initiative is part of a mandate by the Ontario Energy Board designed to improve customer bills and make them a more effective tool for helping households and small businesses better manage their energy costs.

Beginning in November, residential customers who are on Guelph Hydro’s regular billing plan will receive a bill every month indicating their new payment due date. Although some small businesses have been on monthly billing for some time, other small businesses that currently pay their bill every two months will also begin receiving a monthly bill.

Customers who currently pay their bill directly from their bank account under a Pre-Authorized Payment Plan will have their payment to Guelph Hydro processed through their bank account on a monthly basis instead of a bi-monthly basis according to the due date on their bill.

Customers who are registered for Guelph Hydro’s Equal Payment Plan will be contacted and given the choice of a new date for the monthly debit from their bank account which will be aligned with the new billing periods.

Customers should watch their Guelph Hydro bills this fall for bill inserts and bill messages providing information about the new monthly billing program.
